Creative task: Female Artistic Education
Module: “Woman in the Society“
You have probably noticed that most of the renowned names in the history of art belong to men. This does not mean females were not inclined to be artists. Women had limited possibilities to access artistic education. However, many of them achieved success in the world of art.
- What artistic academies or universities do you know? Try to learn when they were established and at what point in history women were allowed to attend classes. For example, The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków was created in 1818 but first female students were able to join it only in 1918.
- Back when women were not allowed to attend art academies, most of the female painters learned in private studios or from male relatives. However, they were never allowed to study the human body with nude models the same way men did. Look below at the names of renowned female artists who worked in different times and places and represent various styles. Use the internet search and try to find out what kind of artistic education they received.
